Why are the sites being cut back?
It’s a cost issue; the bluebox program overall cost the County $100,000 last year. With the value of materials at a record low, and transportation costs high, the impact of this service on our budget is too great. The reduction in sites equals a reduction in cost. Other cuts have been made as well to address budget issues.
What about glass?
Glass has become a challenge for recycling programs nationwide. In areas where it is mixed with other materials, the cost goes up, the value goes down, and the amount actually recycled overall goes down, which also means the amount of recycling that gets landfilled actually goes up. While it’s true that glass can be recycled indefinitely, it is the most vulnerable to contamination. Ultimately the cost of glass, even when sorted by color and free of contamination, is still high when the collection and transportation are factored in.
So can I still recycle glass in Mason County?
We are still accepting it for recycling at all four transfer stations in Mason County. This won’t work for everyone, but it is better than having no options.
You can also recycle glass (as well as electronic wastes and other items) at Wilson Recycling on Brockdale.
