Planning Division

The Planning Division is responsible for long-range and current land use planning. Long-range planning includes preparation of the comprehensive plan, Growth Management Act (GMA) compliance, watershed and sub-area planning, and the preparation of land use and environmental regulations. The Planning Division also provides support for the Planning Commission in the processing of the comprehensive plan and critical areas ordinances.

Public participation is invited. All planning and some permit review requires public involvement. Please contact ext. 282 for meeting times or to be placed on mailing lists.

The Planning Division functions include the following:

  • Critical Area and Environmental Protection
  • Administration of State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA)
  • Issuance of Shoreline Permits, Variances and Conditional Use Permits
  • Short Plat Processing
  • Subdivision Processing
  • Code Enforcement
  • Forest Practices, when land is changing to a non-forest use
  • Addressing
  • Watershed Planning
  • Salmon Recovery Planning
  • Recreation Vehicle and manufactured homes Parks

Planning also administers a flood damage prevention ordinance which has siting standards for persons building in the 100-year flood plains of Mason County.

The Planning Division is also one of the county offices which reviews building permits.
